Dear Readers,
The study entitled "Material Flow Analysis Plastics in Germany", containing data and facts on the production, consumption, waste collection and recovery of plastics, provides information on the current status of a topic that is of key importance to the plastics industry, namely the circular economy. Work began recently on the study for data from 2023 that is compiled every two years by Conversio Market & Strategy GmbH. You can find out in the first article of our newsletter what new aspects will be included in the actual edition.
Another area of focus of our information service is "Plastics in the Environment". This time we report about microplastic and plastic pellets as well as about enzymes that, according to a study, can break down PET. German scientists hope that the first of these can be used in future on a large scale for breaking down plastics. You can read more about the study and the results in the section "From research and science ". Through recently introduced restrictions and a planned EU regulation to avoid pellet losses, Brussels aims to reduce the amount of microplastic in the environment in Europe, as you can see in an article in our newsletter in the section "From politics and industry".
Our interview partner in this edition, Dipl.-Ing. Rainer Zies, is Managing Director of the recycling and compounding company MKV Kunststoffgranulate and, as such, and in his function as a board member of the association of manufacturers of technical plastic products, has been entrusted for many years with the issue of preventing pellet losses. We asked him to give us an insight into what concrete measures are being taken in recycling companies to prevent pellets being discharged into the environment.
At the end of November, BKV held an online event on the subject of "Plastics in the Environment with the focus on pellet losses". Conversio Market & Strategy GmbH presented the results from the special report “pellet losses". Other short keynote speeches, especially about the industry initiatives being taken in the plastics value chain, offered an opportunity to find out about and exchange information on current developments, avoidance measures and best practices in everyday operations. You can read more about this in one of the news articles
We wish you an interesting read and hope that the information we have put together for you are useful for your work. Many thanks for your interest in our newsletter and we wish you a successful new year in 2024!
Kind regards,
BKV GmbH FCIO (Austrian Chemical Industry Association) IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V. (German Plastics Packaging Industry Association) PlasticsEurope Deutschland e.V. VDMA Association Plastics and Rubber Machinery
